Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has finally materialized in India. It was launched in Haryana on November 25, 2010. Indian citizens had to wait for long time for this. Those who stay abroad knows that this is available there.

Telecom minister Kapil Sibal unveiled MNP in Haryana and said that Mobile Number Portability will be available throughout India by March 2011.

Mobile Number Portability allows mobile users to switch from one mobile operator to another without actually changing the Mobile Number. It means if (for ex:) I have a Mobile number 958475xxxx with Vodafone network. I can change it to Idea cellular without changing the mobile number.

How to Port a Mobile Number / How to switch from one mobile operator to another using MNP?

1. Take your mobile and Send an SMS to 1900 in following format:

   PORTMobile Number – eg. PORT 958475xxxx.

2. You should be receiving and SMS which contains a unique porting code which will be helpful in future when switching the mobile operator.
3. Now send the SMS to the preferred operator quoting the unique code.
   Note that the unique code is valid for only few days. You have to use it otherwise you have to follow the 1 and 2 steps again.
4. Step 1-3 are your steps. Now Mobile operator steps in… The existing operator will give a go ahead and approves for Mobile Number Portability to the new operator provided you have no outstanding bills or dues
5. If everything has gone fine, then you should receive an SMS on the time and date when porting will take place. The process is said to complete after 4 days of applying.
6. Once the porting is completed, you should wait for an SMS which from your new operator confirming the switch of Mobile operator
7. Expect for the mobile being offline for few hours when the Mobile Number porting is going on..

How much Mobile Portability Number cost ?

A maximum of Rs. 19 will be charged by any of telecom operators for porting a mobile number.
