FaceBook Page and Kids: A Correlation

This is a guest post by Warner Carter. If you would like to write for NiharsWorld, check our guest posting guidelines.

Most Internet users these days are kids and majority of them care less about their country. They are just kids and we cannot blame them if they put higher priorities on Facebook and spending time playing strategy games on the Internet. Well, what is better than playtime and cartoons at that age?

One Facebook Page has helped kids in gaining a “momentary national awareness”

Few hours after news broke that Bin Laden was killed by the United States troops, the “Osama Bin Laden is DEAD” Facebook Page has begun hitting US homes, with the number of likes at 200,000 and counting. It was just an ordinary Fan Page, though, but because of different global news channels’ sensationalizing coverage and parents’ overreacting about Osama’s death (and of course, US TROOPS unwavering bravery and valor), this somewhat became more than national news.

It hit social media sites like hurricane

This would have been ordinary news for some kids, if Facebook was not in the picture. Yet they’ve noticed the “Osama Bin Laden is DEAD” Facebook Page on their Home Page, stirring notions that it’s “cool” if they join in on the commotion and click the Like button as well. When they did, they started to wonder who these guys (Obama and Bin Laden) were.

These kids may even be the reason Osama Bin Laden became a trending topic on Yahoo! that day. Moreover, there are reports that kids somewhat treated this issue as “cool”.

For a brief moment, kids became acquainted with Osama Bin Laden, the US Troops, Barack Obama and the United States of America. In addition, even American pre-school and elementary teachers confessed that some of their students began asking about these guys, as they developed a little interest in national issues like terrorism and war.

Apparently, Obama, Bin Laden, and all these shenanigans are all fictional characters to some American kids today. Some of them even thought of Hitler and Dwayne “The Rock Johnson” as a current United States leader.

They said that they learned about this issue on Facebook, through the OSAMA BIN LADEN IS DEAD Fan Page, and not from their wildly celebrating parents while watching CNN and sipping wine in a very nationalistic fashion.

At least, Obama reminded these kids that they still have a hardworking President.

Nice post. However, I don’t really agree that spending more time on facebook and strategy games is better than playtime and cartoon. In fact, this is being seen quite opposite.

      Hey there Nihar, nice blog.

Its amazing how facebook has started to influence everybody including the kids, but doesn’t FB ban kids younger than 18?
