Cardiff to host ICC Champions Trophy warm-ups

Australia will play two warm-up games in Cardiff before the ICC Champions Trophy this summer as they use the one-day international tournament to get accustomed with British wickets ahead of the Ashes.

The tourists are scheduled to play West Indies on 1 June before a clash with India three days later: games that could give an early indication of how Australia fare later in the summer.

Michael Clarke leads a 15-man team to Wales that are aiming to win the ICC Champions Trophy for the first time and, having begun 2013 in fine fettle, are genuine contenders for the title.

Already this season the team recovered from a 2-2 ODI series draw with Sri Lanka to see off West Indies 5-0 in February and their first warm-up at Glamorgan’s ground is likely to earn another victory.

Indeed, the team needs to get off to a winning start when they touch down in the UK, for a good spirit in the dressing room will only help Clarke and co. when the Ashes build-up begins.

The fact the Champions Trophy is in England and Wales this summer can only help Australia’s players and coaching staff become accustomed to the conditions and with England in their group Clarke has a chance to land the first blow.

Australia do have a difficult group to navigate, with defending champions New Zealand and January adversaries Sri Lanka also to play, but a new vice-captain in George Bailey should give the team an extra kick this summer.

Make no mistake, Clarke’s main ambition is to reclaim the Ashes and then defend it back home but, with the Australian one-day scene ready for success once again, betting fans can expect a good campaign from this touring side. Click here for betting odds with bet365.
