An eventful year has passed by. Many events that reflect a myriad hues of the universe. Change of guard in the White House, eventful celestial events like solar eclipse and the geo-climatic changes. And lo! 2009 ends with a lunar eclipse.

But for us, the surfers it is all in a nutshell. We at Nihar’s World have been trying to keep abreast.

And all we say as we complete two years is ‘Let us explore more and let us enjoy more the marvels of modern technology… the internet.

The world is shrinking and is a global village already. Let us make it a global family.

Today, i upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.8. The upgradation went fine without any problems.

Wordpress 2.8

But after upgrading, I felt that the Dashboard and wordpress admin pages were loading very slow. Each page was taking 5-10 seconds to load.

I then opened the blog and tried browsing some posts. There was the same effect. The blog was slow.

It was for sure that Blog slowed down due to Wordpress 2.8 Upgrade. My first suspect was to check the plugins. There are 40+ plugins that i use. I was sure that this is due to some plugin which may not be supporting Wordpress 2.8.

I went to Plugin page and disabled all plugins at one go and saw the pages started loading faster.

I then started enabling plugins one by one and then I found the culprit plugin that slowed down the blog post upgrading to Wordpress 2.8 .

The plugin was Performancing Ads plugin. I disabled the plugin, jumped to Performancing Ads and got the javascript code to display 125X125 Ad on the sidebar.

I was surprised and was also upset on myself to see that i was using a plugin instead of placing just a one liner javascript to display the ad

The problem was solved.

Did you guys find any problem? If yes do leave a comment about the problem and the plugin that caused the problem after upgrading to Wordpress 2.8. I am sure that this will be of help to all those who have faced problems after upgrading to Wordpress 2.8

Few days back, I informed you that I Want to Change My Blog Theme. I had also asked for suggestions. Lot of loyal readers had given their suggestions. I was happy to see the response. From that day onwards, I was on the look out for a new theme.

As i was hunting down for a theme, I went through a lot of sites. But, I finally decided to go for Imagination Theme from CSS Jockey.

Big thanks to Shankar Bakshi ’s post where i came to know about Imagination Free Theme.

Guys, This blog has been dressed up with two themes before. CopyBlogger Theme with Three Columns from the inception of this blog way back in December 2007 to May 2008 (6 months) and WP Premium Theme(current one) From May 2008 to till Date.

I have done lots of tinkering to this theme from Increasing the Sidebar Width, CSS Changes, Implementing Rounded Boxes in Sidebar and lots of other stuff. I am now looking for a new look. I am now bored of this old look

I would like you all readers/bloggers to pour in with your suggestions on Themes that i should try.

The new Wordpress theme should have following features

1. SEO supported
2. Two sidebars on right side
3. Should fit 125X125 3 ads on the sidebar at the top
4. Each sidebar should be 160px minimum
5. Adsense support with HIGH CTR
6. Other stuff…

Hello to all fellow bloggers, I am subscribed Google Adsense Official Blog via email. I get email updates whenever they publish a new post. During this weekend, I read the email about Google Adsense updating their policy. I just glanced it and didn’t read it properly. May be i was busy or feeling lazy

Thanks to Micheal. After reading his post, i got to know that the mail that i read in the weekend is a serious mail and need to revisit that email.

All bloggers or website owners who are using Google Adsense need to update their Privacy policy to include new information.

Why updating Privacy policy is must?

This is due to recent changes in Google Adsense. Google Adsense recently launched an interest-based type of advertising that allows advertisers to show ads based on visitor’s interactions in the past. It uses cookies to store the information.

Do update your privacy policy and if you don’t have privacy policy then create it and include this new Google policy in it. It is must requirement.

For more information about this new interest-based type of advertising, please visit the official Google AdSense Blog.

You need to update the Privacy Policy page by 8th April 2009. (if you don’t, doesn’t know what will happen.)

Refer to the guidelines on Google Advertising Cookie and Privacy Policies to find out what information that you need to include in your Privacy Policy.

I used Micheal’s Privacy policy to include that bit in Privacy Policy . You can copy it. However, I don’t want to be hold responsible if my policy is incomplete. Use it at your own risk!

Add the following in your Privacy Policy Page

The problem on my site is Referring Sites traffic which comes to 6.15% of whole traffic, last month it was 6.56%. No big change . The decrease in Referring sites is because I didn’t get enough traffic from Stumble upon traffic.

The Search Engine traffic is 81.44 which is very good and it also beat the December 2008 Search Engine traffic 69.92%.

Things happened on this blog in January 2009 :

1. I got first private advertiser. The advertiser paid 10$/month for 125X125 Ad spot on the sidebar.

NiharsWorld December 2008 Stat is less compared to November

Here is December 2008 Monthly Statistics and Earnings of this blog!.

Following is December 2008 Statistics: 59,738 Visits, 131,507 Pageviews

• Search Engines – 41,766 (69.92%) visits
• Direct Traffic – 14,053 (23.52%) visits
• Referring Sites – 3,919 (6.56%) visits

Traffic in December is less compared to November.

Referring Sites traffic breakdown (Top 3):

1. StumbleUpon – 570 visits
2. Entrecard – 439 visits
3. Mixx.com – 243 visits

In Wordpress 2.7 Features, a new feature – Threaded Comments is introduced.

The problem is that most of the wordpress bloggers are facing is that their theme doesn’t support Threaded or Nested Comments.

To check whether Threaded Comments is supported by your current theme or not, Follow the below steps:

1. Upgrade Wordpress is to 2.7 version, if not yet upgraded.
2. Login to Wordpress admin and go to Settings -> Discussion
3. Check on “Enable threaded (nested) comments ‘n’ levels deep”.
4. Click Save changes to enable Threaded Comments.
5. View any post of your blog that contains few comments.

If you see a Reply link after each comment like shown below, then your Wordpress Theme supports Threaded Comments otherwise it doesn’t support:



You will see reply links for every individual comment

My current theme doesn’t support it. I have made some changes to comments.php and style.css to support Threaded Comments. But, the changes are not yet live on my blog. I have done whole testing on my Local PC and the screenshot is taken from there. I need to do little bit of tinkering in CSS. By the way, if you are new to CSS then Learn CSS by reading this Book. Continue reading this post, To implement Threaded Comments feature in your Wordpress theme
Before you proceed further, please make a backup of comments.php, functions.php and style.css

If you want your theme to be backward compatible (compatible with Wordpress 2.7 and older versions), then do the following:

You can skip the below steps, if you just want your theme to be compatible with Wordpress 2.7

1. Copy comments.php with a new name legacy.comments.php. This legacy.comments.php will be used, if your wordpress is older version and comments.php will be used for Wordpress 2.7.
2. Copy the below code and paste in Themes functions.php file

3. Above code will check whether wp_list_comments function exists or not. If exists, it will cleverly use comments.php (which will contain Comment Threading feature) otherwise it will use legacy.comments.php which is original comments.php code that came with the theme.

JavaScript Comment Functionality

To allow full JavaScript functionality with the comment features in WordPress 2.7, the following changes must be made to header.php.

To support the new JavaScript functionality with comment threading, add the following in the header.php immediately before the call to wp_head():

Most of the changes are done. If everything is done properly, you should be seeing Comment Threading appearing on the post. But, with the new code for comments in place, you need to style the comments area on the WordPress Theme with more design integration than previously.

Below is the snippet of CSS Styling that i added to current Theme’s style.css, you can refer this for your understanding and style it according to your Themes look:

There is a good news for all bloggers who blog on Wordpress Platform. WordPress 2.7 has finally been released!

Though there was Wordpress 2.7 Beta version was available, i didn’t upgrade my blog. I was sitting happy with Wordpress 2.6. Few hours back i upgraded my blog to Wordpress 2.7. There are lot of features that have been added. The first feature you will see as soon as you upgrade your blog is a Brand New look to your Wordpress Dashboard. I was surprised to see that the whole look of Wordpress Administration. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version.



List of Wordpress 2.7 New Features.

1. Totally customizable Dashboard and post area
2. New User interface & Layout.
3. A Sticky post feature
4. Built-in Threaded comments support (my current theme doesn’t support,but i will modify the theme to support it. Will also come with a post, so stay tuned!)
5. Automatic Wordpress Upgrade
6. Reply comments through the admin interface
7. AJAX on the administration
