We all bloggers know that Comments are the lifeline for the Blog. Comments give readers a way to talk to blog owner and exchange ideas, suggestions or debate about a topic.

Most of the bloggers are active commentators in other blogs for mainly two reasons:

1. To keep updated about the latest happenings in any niche (it can be technology, science, sports, etc.,)
2. Commenting can also serve as a Marketing tool for their own Blog.

Most of us are tired of typing in the same comment fields in lots of blogs (Name, Email-id and website address). What if we have something which will detect the blog and auto-fill the comments form? It will save 5-15 seconds of your precious time.

I found out that there is a Firefox Add-on called Easy Comment.

Easy Comment Firefox add-on will help you filling out the comments form by entering name, email and web homepage address. It supports blogging platforms like Wordpress, Movable Type and Dotclear. This plugin is must for all the users who leave lots of comments daily. I am one of them

How to autofill comments form on wordpress or other blogs:

1. Download and install Easy Comment Firefox Add-on
2. Click on the Easy Comment text in the status bar. For the first time, it will ask you to prefill Name, Email and Home webpage address. From next time onwards, just click on Easy Comment found in the Status bar and it will fill the comment form for you!

Easy Comment may not work properly on some blogs where the default parameters in the comments form are changed.

Today i am going to show on How to setup FeedDemon to Synchronize with Google Reader

First and foremost step is you need to Download Feed Demon

Download FeedDemon Latest Client

Setup FeedDemon Client to Synchronization with Google Reader

1. Hope you have already downloaded the FeedDemon Latest Client (above is the link)
2. Now start installing FeedDemon
3. After few steps during installation, You should see below Google Reader Synchronization
   
4. Select “Yes, Enable Synchronization” and click next
5. It will again ask you with Yes and No option. Click Yes to Synchronize with Google Reader.
6. Now, you will get a prompt to enter Google username and password. Enter the correct username where you have all the feeds in Google Reader
7. It may take seconds or minutes to synchronize with Google Reader
8. You are done. Now, if you both FeedDemon and Google Reader are in Sync

Most of us follow our favorite blogs via RSS Feeds. To keep track of all the blogs, i use FeedDemon on my PC and Newsgator on the Web as a online feed reader.

Both Newsgator and FeedDemon synchronize feeds so, that both are in sync.

Few days back, Newsgator has come up with a news that their Online Feed Reader will no longer be available. This news has caused upset to lot of users who depend on both to keep track of the blogs or news.

You guys might have noticed if you had tried to login to NewsGator account.

Now, to make sure that your feeds both in FeedDemon and Online web Feed Reader in Sync. You need to signup an account in Google Reader and move the Feeds from Newsgator to Google Reader.

How to Move Feeds from Newsgator to Google Reader

1. Sign-up for a Google Reader™ account

   You can use your existing Gmail account to login to Google Reader, so that Google Reader is also attached to the Gmail id you use the most.

2. Export NewsGator RSS Feeds
• Login to NewsGator Online
• Check on the top Nav Bar, you should see Settings. Click on it
• A new page will open, You will see Tabs on the Tab. Click on Edit Locations
  
• Under the NewsGator Web Edition Location, click OPML
• A new page will open. Now Select Expose OPML to all users and click Save Changes button
  
• Click OPML once more. A web page will open which will have OPML URL link. Click on it
• It will open the link in your browser, select File | Save as and save the file with extension .opml

  Now the first task is completed i.e., Exporting RSS Feeds into OPML file from NewsGator.

3. Import your NewsGator RSS OPML to Google Reader
• In Google Reader, click on Settings
• A page will open. Now click on Import/Export link
• Now click on Choose OPML file button and select the OPML file you saved in the previous step.
• Now click on Upload button to import OPML file to your Google Reader
• Google Reader will add all the subscriptions in the list to your account and start checking the feeds for updates

If you have followed the above steps properly, you have successfully transferred all the Feeds from Newsgator to Google Reader.

How to synchronize feeds between Google Reader and FeedDemon

All these days we were able to Synchronize feeds between FeedDemon and Newsgator. This was due to compatibility and understanding between both parties. Now that Newsgator is discontinuing Online Web Feed Reader. FeedDemon new version will be able to keep the feeds in the sync with your Google Reader.

In order to tell FeedDemon to keep the feeds in sync with Google Reader, you need to Download below FeedDemon and install it.

Today, i upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.8. The upgradation went fine without any problems.

Wordpress 2.8

But after upgrading, I felt that the Dashboard and wordpress admin pages were loading very slow. Each page was taking 5-10 seconds to load.

I then opened the blog and tried browsing some posts. There was the same effect. The blog was slow.

It was for sure that Blog slowed down due to Wordpress 2.8 Upgrade. My first suspect was to check the plugins. There are 40+ plugins that i use. I was sure that this is due to some plugin which may not be supporting Wordpress 2.8.

I went to Plugin page and disabled all plugins at one go and saw the pages started loading faster.

I then started enabling plugins one by one and then I found the culprit plugin that slowed down the blog post upgrading to Wordpress 2.8 .

The plugin was Performancing Ads plugin. I disabled the plugin, jumped to Performancing Ads and got the javascript code to display 125X125 Ad on the sidebar.

I was surprised and was also upset on myself to see that i was using a plugin instead of placing just a one liner javascript to display the ad

The problem was solved.

Jonny from Jonnys Blog left a comment few days back on my Previous Post Broken Links Remover – A must Wordpress Plugin. He mentioned a freeware tool that can check all the broken links of any website. I took a look at that freeware software. It is a great tool to use for all the webmasters.

Xenu’s Link Sleuth is a freeware tool to check Broken Links of your website. It uses multi-threading to scan broken links. Hence, it is very fast compared to any other link checking software. Given the URL of the website, It can come up with all the broken links withe the details like title, type, size etc. It does all this pretty quickly.

How to use Xenu’s Link Sleuth

1. Download and install the program
2. Run the program and enter the URL of the website which you want to check
3. Now it will check for all links like normal links, images, backgrounds, style sheets, scripts and java applets.

After this, It will display a continuously updated list of URLs which it has scanned so far. You can sort the list based on a certain criteria. Since, it also displays the size of each page / image, you could use this tool to check any fat pages and large images and try to optimize them to reduce the page size and the load time.

It will also scan and list out all the In-bound links and Out-bound links so you know which of your pages are most linked and contain the most outgoing links. It also displays the Missing titles and Missing Alt Text for images. This way you can find out the problems and fix it to improve your SEO score.

A full report can also be generated which can be used.

I liked this tool very much because of it’s Mult-purpose usage. Its main purpose is to find Broken Links, But as you saw in above, It can be also used to find Missing Title and Missing Alt text and can be used to improve SEO score. It can be also used to find out any fat pages and large images.

I have found a new Wordpress plugin called WP Greet Box. I am found it really interesting and am impressed with this plugin. I am going to first instroduce you to WP Greet Box and will give my review!

What is WP Greet Box?

This is a Wordpress plugin which show a different greeting message to your new visitors depending on their referrer URL.

Below are Few examples

If visitor arrives to the post from Google search engine, they will see a message asking to subscribe to the RSS feed if they liked the post. The plugin will also show posts based on the search keyword used in google search engine.

If a visitor arrives from Twitter, they will see a message suggesting them to twit the post and follow you on Twitter.

You can also set a default greeting message for new visitors (not matching any referrer URLs) suggesting them to subscribe to your RSS feed.

These greetings helps the visitor with the suggestions and reader interaction.

My review on WP Greet Box

You can download the from Wordpress Plugin directory. I use WP Easy Uploader Plugin to download and upload the plugin on my blog from Wordpress Admin itself.

There are no hassles for installing the plugin. It is pretty simple.

Upon activating the plugin, just go to Settings -> WP Greet Box. You will see list of referrers that are inbuilt with the plugin. If you don’t find a particular referrer then, you can add new referrers to the blog. you can also edit or delete referrers to your blog. Not only this, you can also activate or deactivate each referrer individually.

One more thing i liked and would like to mention here is the ability to display related posts. If the visitor visits the blog from any search engine, then along with the greet message you will see related posts for a query based on the search keyword used.

In Wordpress 2.7 Features, a new feature – Threaded Comments is introduced.

The problem is that most of the wordpress bloggers are facing is that their theme doesn’t support Threaded or Nested Comments.

To check whether Threaded Comments is supported by your current theme or not, Follow the below steps:

1. Upgrade Wordpress is to 2.7 version, if not yet upgraded.
2. Login to Wordpress admin and go to Settings -> Discussion
3. Check on “Enable threaded (nested) comments ‘n’ levels deep”.
4. Click Save changes to enable Threaded Comments.
5. View any post of your blog that contains few comments.

If you see a Reply link after each comment like shown below, then your Wordpress Theme supports Threaded Comments otherwise it doesn’t support:

You will see reply links for every individual comment

My current theme doesn’t support it. I have made some changes to comments.php and style.css to support Threaded Comments. But, the changes are not yet live on my blog. I have done whole testing on my Local PC and the screenshot is taken from there. I need to do little bit of tinkering in CSS. By the way, if you are new to CSS then Learn CSS by reading this Book. Before you proceed further, please make a backup of comments.php, functions.php and style.css

If you want your theme to be backward compatible (compatible with Wordpress 2.7 and older versions), then do the following:

You can skip the below steps, if you just want your theme to be compatible with Wordpress 2.7

1. Copy comments.php with a new name legacy.comments.php. This legacy.comments.php will be used, if your wordpress is older version and comments.php will be used for Wordpress 2.7.
2. Copy the below code and paste in Themes functions.php file

To allow full JavaScript functionality with the comment features in WordPress 2.7, the following changes must be made to header.php.

To support the new JavaScript functionality with comment threading, add the following in the header.php immediately before the call to wp_head():

Most of the changes are done. If everything is done properly, you should be seeing Comment Threading appearing on the post. But, with the new code for comments in place, you need to style the comments area on the WordPress Theme with more design integration than previously.

There is a good news for all bloggers who blog on Wordpress Platform. WordPress 2.7 has finally been released!

Though there was Wordpress 2.7 Beta version was available, i didn’t upgrade my blog. I was sitting happy with Wordpress 2.6. Few hours back i upgraded my blog to Wordpress 2.7. There are lot of features that have been added. The first feature you will see as soon as you upgrade your blog is a Brand New look to your Wordpress Dashboard. I was surprised to see that the whole look of Wordpress Administration. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version.

2. New User interface & Layout.
3. A Sticky post feature
4. Built-in Threaded comments support (my current theme doesn’t support,but i will modify the theme to support it. Will also come with a post, so stay tuned!)

6. Reply comments through the admin interface
7. AJAX on the administration

As i mentioned above, my current theme does not support Threaded comments. I am right now editing the current theme to get it working. Once i get it working, I will publish a post on how to edit the comments.php to get Threaded comments working. Two comments awaiting for moderation on my blog!

To moderate blog comments, Most of us login to wordpress admin and check for any new comments awaiting to be moderated.

I discovered couple of days back that now there is no need to check wordpress admin every hour to see whether there are any new comments or not.

All it takes is a wordpress plugin and an application. The application sits in your Desktop – System tray and notifies whenever there is a new comment made on your blog, something similar to yahoo messenger or Gtalk.

Isn’t great?

The Wordpress plugin is Moderator. and is written by Daniel Dura

Moderator is a combination of a WordPress plugin and an Adobe Air Application.

Adobe AIR application will sit on your desktop in system tray:

1. Viewing unmoderated comments.
2. Dock and system tray notifications of the number of unmoderated comments.
3. Accept, delete, and spam comments from within the desktop client.
4. Close application window, or minimize it to the system tray while running.
5. Shows the Gravatar icons for the user who posted the comment.

Install and activate the plugin, then download and install the Adobe Air application. Once the installation goes smoothly, you will see a black colored window appearing. Just enter wordpress username and password. Its Done!!

From now you can access to comment moderation queue right from your desktop. It also shows an icon in the system tray, the icon is similar to the comment moderation bubble graphic with a number that represents the amount of comments in the moderation queue.

I think this is a very good feature that you can start using to moderate comments!

CommentLuv Wordpress Plugin

I am big fan of CommentLuv Wordpress plugin developed by Andy Bailey from FiddyP. I published a post few months back on How to get more comments and visitors by using CommentLuv Plugin.

I am using CommentLuv plugin on this wordpress blog from May 2008. Andy got so many inputs from the bloggers for improving CommentLuv plugin and his zeal made him to improve the plugin. This week he has released a new version of CommentLuv called AjaxCommentLuv.

From CommentLuv:

CommentLuv and AjaxCommentLuv enable you to reward your blog readers by leaving a titled link to their last post automatically whenever they comment thus encouraging more comments by more people on more posts!

It has been found to increase comments and traffic to blogs and their commentators. It currently runs as a Wordpress or Drupal plugin with a new AJAX version coming soon compatible with a wide range of blogs.

The previous version of commentluv used to grab the last post of the commentator. But new verison of commentluv will allow the commentator to select any one of his/her from last 10 posts.

If you register your site for free at CommentLuv.com you will be able to open up lots of features that are for members only like link tracking so you can see which of the comments you make on CommentLuv blogs are getting the last blog post clicked. Do NOT enter a number if you do not have one

Steps to setup CommentLuv Plugin : (skip step 2 to 4 if you don’t want to register your site)

1. Download CommentLuv Plugin and upload and install it or you can use WP Easy Uploader Plugin to download CommentLuv plugin and install it
2. After the plugin is activated. Go to www.commentluv.com and Register yourself by inputting user id, email id and password and submitting the form. You will recieve an email to activate your id at commentluv.com.
3. Now login in commentluv.com and go to Settings page. There you will add your website by giving your website url and then you have to select a badge which is an image that you need to put in your homepage on the sidebar or footer.
4. Click on verify to get the badge verified then input your feed url for ex : http://feedproxy.google.com/Thinkersonmove
5. In your wordpress admin, Go to Settings -> CommentLuv. You will see below screenshot

It is a great widget. I have been using it since December 2007.

• Dashboard page (check the above screenshot as a reference) where you can see a graph showing the number of users online during the past 24 hours. Below that you will see a section on the left showing Number of people on each page along with urls where they are. It also shows Where they come from using a globe map which in on the right hand side.
• Readers page shows the list of the most popular pages, with the number of people on each page. You can view it in two ways, Recent or Grouped. Check the options listed below which is inside a Red rectangle.
