Dostana - Bollywood Movie Review

True friends forever:gay or not gay

Why do most big-budget/big banner movies turn out to be boring and average? Why do much-awaited releases fail to meet our expectations? These are some of the questions that kept coming to my mind as I started watching 'Dostana' this weekend. I knew from the trailers that this was a complete commercial with the usual dosage of entertainment. So, was ready to see something illogical yet fun and musti. Directors like Yash Chopra have always made movies on issues that are still a taboo in India or are controversial. They have managed to include such topics as live-in relationships, infidelity, multiple relationships in a light and entertaining way. Karan Johar follows suit with introducing the lead male protagonists acting like a gay couple(a concept that is accepted in the West but unknown to us).

2008 Bollywood Movie Analysis in leisure time

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

This year the Hindi film industry has seen a varied flavors of movies: from comedy to sensible, from remake to animation, from artistic to copy, from class to crass. So before we reach the final quarter of this year and a whole lot of movies release, I thought of mentioning some of these that were not worth a miss.

We saw movies like Janne tu ya jaane na and Rock On targeted at the younger audience. Movies that were entertaining and did a fair business. Then the typical commercial movies like Singh is King and Kismat Konnection that received a warm welcome in small cities as well as the metropolis. Those hungry for some action on the screen got it in Mission Istanbul and Race. We also saw movies like Sarkar Raj and Aamir which were appreciated by a certain genre of people. Below I list 5 of my favorites from the 2008 releases, some of them may go totally unappreciated but will always remain praiseworthy:

Here are some Bollywood Movie Analysis in 2008

Bachna Ae Haseeno Movie Review

Bachna Ae Haseeno: An extravagant-turns-boring affair!

Bachna Ae Haseeno: An extravagant-turns-boring affair!

One of the much awaited film finally arrives. Has all the ingredients intact - great locations, good cinematography, soothing music. It has fair performances too. But the 'script' strikes again! Or, the lack of it.

The story revolves around Raj- a Casanova who dumps two girls and finally falls in love with a girl who dumps him. When he suffers, he plans to go apologize to the two girls for all the wrong he has done. How he does it and what he receives at the end of it forms the second half of the movie.

The main idea reminds me of "do good things and good things will happen to you" from the American sitcom 'My Name Is Earl'. The story also resembles Tamil flick 'Autograph'. Had the whole movie been comic or melodramatic like them, it would have still entertained. A badly-written script spoils it all.

Kismat Konnection Movie Review

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008
Kismat Konnection's kismat fails to shine

Kismat Konnection's kismat fails to shine

The story starts with a regular day in a not so lucky guy Raj's life. He meets his ladylove Priya and things start improving. How his life changes and he meets success forms the crux of the story. And how it is narrated to us becomes nearly a nightmare for us.

Predictable at most of the times, it still keeps us glued to the seat for the first one hour. Will the underworld goon threaten Raj's life for the money he lended? What would happen when the truth is revealed to Priya that she was just his lucky charm? Will Raj meet success if Priya marries her fiance and leaves him?

The next one hour you just wait and wait for the movie to end. Post-interval it gets so slow that you stop emphatising with the lead protagonist and you even stop caring about what happens next.
