Character information:

Naseeruddin Shah as Khalujan

Khalujan is a pure romantic hearted person. In the world of crime, he is a bit of an odd cookie. A sharp minded Khalujan has been toughened up several years living in the world of guns and gangsters; yet, he is very loving and emotional at the core. He wants to go back to his village and desires to settle down in a quiet, peaceful country life existence. But life had other plans for him. Love happens to him.

Arshad Warsi as Babban

Babban is nephew of Khalujan, and he is exact opposite of his uncle and in more ways. If Khalujan is all heart and soul, Babban is all flesh and blood. Babban is lustful, hot-blooded, and scoffs at the idea of accurate idealistic love. Babban is pessimistic, apathetic to finer things in life and tough as nails. Babban discovers what it is to love and to be betrayed, during the course of the film and it makes the inactive softer side of him come alive. Babban cares for Krishna, perhaps for the first time in his life.

Vidya Balan as Krishna Verma

Krishna Verma is the mysterious woman and the forgotten widow. Krishna is a bundle of negations. We see her as a woman frantically in love, as an object of wish, as a vision of purity, and engaging herself in a lustful bout with another man. We connect with her at many levels; a complete understanding of her eludes us which is the attractive thing about her.

Why do most big-budget/big banner movies turn out to be boring and average? Why do much-awaited releases fail to meet our expectations? These are some of the questions that kept coming to my mind as I started watching ‘Dostana’ this weekend. I knew from the trailers that this was a complete commercial with the usual dosage of entertainment. So, was ready to see something illogical yet fun and musti. Directors like Yash Chopra have always made movies on issues that are still a taboo in India or are controversial. They have managed to include such topics as live-in relationships, infidelity, multiple relationships in a light and entertaining way. Karan Johar follows suit with introducing the lead male protagonists acting like a gay couple(a concept that is accepted in the West but unknown to us).

Kunal and Sameer(our two hot dudes Abhishek Bacchan and John Abraham) act like a gay couple so that they get a lavish house for rent. They eventually fall in love with their housemate Neha( the gorgeous Priyanka Chopra) who in turn falls in love with her boss Abhimanyu(the classy Bobby Deol). Kunal-Sam-Neha are very good friends and they have some very touching scenes. The plot gets predictable at times. Still, it has its little package of surprises and laughter like the narration of Kunal-Sam fake love story or the scene where Sam’s mom appears at Neha’s house and is convinced by all present that her son’s situation is acceptable and when she later accepts Sam-Kunal relationship and formally welcomes her bahu/damaad or when Neha assumes that Sam-Kunal love her boss. The comedy picked pace after the first half hour of predictable track. However, post-interval it got too dramatic and boring.

The costumes are good. Locations great. Music catchy. Cinematography superb. Actors brilliant but the script lacks in a lot of things. I cringed at the slapstick comedy and the many references to gay behavior. At times you wish there was more speed to the story or less of the stereotypically hindi-movie twists n turns. I personally found the climax atrocious with the two guys declaring in front of the whole crowd that they have hurt their friend(and what followed it).

All this said, you may still go ahead and watch it over the weekend. This Hindi flick is far better than some of the disastrous big-budget movies this year. Jr Bacchan is awesome in all the scenes. John Abraham fans will have a great time watching him as he is seen in beachwear most of the time. Priyanka is a brilliant actor. Rest of the cast act melodramatically as per the demands of the script. Some of the Kunal-Sam-Neha moments are well-done. Their friendship rocks. Director Tarun Mansukhani does a fair job. Had he tried a little harder Dostana would have been listed in league with the best comedy and friendship-based movies.

My Rating: 3 / 5

This year the Hindi film industry has seen a varied flavors of movies: from comedy to sensible, from remake to animation, from artistic to copy, from class to crass. So before we reach the final quarter of this year and a whole lot of movies release, I thought of mentioning some of these that were not worth a miss.

We saw movies like Janne tu ya jaane na and Rock On targeted at the younger audience. Movies that were entertaining and did a fair business. Then the typical commercial movies like Singh is King and Kismat Konnection that received a warm welcome in small cities as well as the metropolis. Those hungry for some action on the screen got it in Mission Istanbul and Race. We also saw movies like Sarkar Raj and Aamir which were appreciated by a certain genre of people. Below I list 5 of my favorites from the 2008 releases, some of them may go totally unappreciated but will always remain praiseworthy:

Here are some Bollywood Movie Analysis in 2008

Jodha Akbar: Amidst all the controversies and questions on the authenticity of the story, the movie provided wholesome entertainment. Kudos to the entire cast and crew for having showcased the grandeur and warfare with such detail and elegance.

Mumbai Meri Jaan: The after effects of serial blasts in the Mumbai local trains on July 11, 2006 are covered brilliantly. Though melodramatic at times, it does convey how a calamitous event can effect human psychology differently.

A Wednesday: This will remain one of my favorites for years to come. The simplicity with which it conveys its message and conveys the seriousness of issues like terrorism and our passive reactions to it is definitely worth mention.

Mukhbiir: A sensitive film about a police informer’s life. How he dislikes seeing death so close but cant let go of his job. How circumstances never allow him to leave his job. How he keeps disguising himself to save the people and yet remains aloof. Sameer Dattani who plays the main lead is superb. Someone always seen in college-type roles comes as a pleasant surprise here.

Welcome to Sajjanpur: Some of the entries above may give you a wrong impression that I like serious movies. But no thats not correct as this one is comedy and sensibility at its best. Shreyas Talpade plays a letter writer, the central character of this film. He is awesome and brings life to his character. Amrita Rao in a never before seen avtar is noteworthy. Issues like caste politics, superstition and belief and widow remarriage are handled quite efficiently. If these issues are shown in a non-commercial movie, they may go unnoticed. Showing them in a lighter vein, does make us think about them. A special mention of the realistic cinematography that makes you believe you are watching scenes from a real village.

One of the much awaited film finally arrives. Has all the ingredients intact – great locations, good cinematography, soothing music. It has fair performances too. But the ’script’ strikes again! Or, the lack of it.

The story revolves around Raj- a Casanova who dumps two girls and finally falls in love with a girl who dumps him. When he suffers, he plans to go apologize to the two girls for all the wrong he has done. How he does it and what he receives at the end of it forms the second half of the movie.

The main idea reminds me of “do good things and good things will happen to you” from the American sitcom ‘My Name Is Earl’. The story also resembles Tamil flick ‘Autograph’. Had the whole movie been comic or melodramatic like them, it would have still entertained. A badly-written script spoils it all.

A YashRaj movie promises a candyfloss romance, chiffon sarees, love-struck dude, amazing locations and popular numbers. Agreed, this movie has most of it. Alas, the recipe for a great entertainer goes wrong somewhere by the end of first half. The second half is predictable and boring.

Ranbir and Deepika in Bachna Ae Haseeno

Minissha, Kunal, Hiten Paintal do full justice to their roles. Bipasha is mind blowing. Deepika gets lesser screen space but nevertheless she is good. Since the story revolves around Raj, Ranbir is present in all the scenes and he stays honest to the role. Music by Vishal-Shekhar is catchy and will remain popular for quite some time.

Siddharth Anand could have spent more time on the screenplay and this would have been the biggest hit of the year. The film will run for a few days with all the teenagers and college-goers lining up in front of cinema halls, courtesy the excellent promotion. But, the fate of BAH is locked. It cannot compete with the successes of other YashRaj products like DTPH, DDLJ or even Bunty aur babli.

The story starts with a regular day in a not so lucky guy Raj’s life. He meets his ladylove Priya and things start improving. How his life changes and he meets success forms the crux of the story. And how it is narrated to us becomes nearly a nightmare for us.

Predictable at most of the times, it still keeps us glued to the seat for the first one hour. Will the underworld goon threaten Raj’s life for the money he lended? What would happen when the truth is revealed to Priya that she was just his lucky charm? Will Raj meet success if Priya marries her fiance and leaves him?

The next one hour you just wait and wait for the movie to end. Post-interval it gets so slow that you stop emphatising with the lead protagonist and you even stop caring about what happens next.

Raj Malhotra reminds you of Raju from ‘Raju ban gaya gentleman’ and Aditya Kashyap of ‘Jab We Met’. Priya reminds you of Jahnvi from ‘Lage raho…’ and her entire ’save community center’ track feels like a sequel to it. Music is good but the songs are average. The only dance number worth watching and dancing to comes at the end during the credits. The actors Vishal Malhotra(who plays Shahid’s friend Hiten), Om Puri, Himani Shivpuri and Juhi Chawla have done justice to their roles. Tellywood actors Karnvir as Dev and Amit Verma as Karan are praiseworthy. Hope to see them in many more Bollywood projects. But Vidya Balan and Shahid Kapur’s acting talents are wasted. They are the only saving grace of this dis-Konnected movie. A little more care in the screenplay and this movie would have done wonders. The look and feel is good but the soul is missing. The slow track makes you yawn and crib at this two and half hour movie which seems to end never.

A 2.5/5 rating for a movie which could otherwise have been a 4. Watch it if you have absolutely nothing else to do this weekend, otherwise you could as well give it a skip and savor the trailers and songs on TV.

This is one movie I was dying to watch thanks to the trailers and was disappointed with the movie reviews. So started watching it with no expectations. And here’s what I think.

The movie starts the usual youth-centered college life fun and masti way. Instantly , I felt that it has been blended after watching 10-15 low-budget-yet-classy South Indian movies. I mean we have already seen that scene where the girl is rescued from goondas by declaring she has AIDS, the lead girl being a little crack by mourning her pet, girl boy are best friends and scream when elders want to marry them off and later realize their feelings. There were similarities and there were traces of friendship scenes from DCH, RDB and the likes. Aditi song even reminded me of ‘musu musu hasi’ from Pyar mein kabhi kabhi. Nonetheless, the story was interesting and entertaining. Slowly, it got gripping. It was predictable, yet at times surprising.

The story of Aditi and Jay is being narrated to a new friend by a bunch of friends. And this is how the story unfolds. Every moment is entertaining and keeps you glued- curious to know the rest.

When I had first heard the name of the movie, I was reminded of a song. I get to hear it in the first five minutes. And then there is this girl who acts like us- the audience; inquisitive and impatient wanting to know what happens next. Really liked the idea of the director to involve the audience totally.

The narration is simple and straight and you keep asking for more. You know the climax, still cant help getting anxious at the turn of events. Yes, the airport scene could have been avoided. It was typically unrealistic commercial Indian movie scene that felt juvenile.

Imran and Genelia are perfect for these roles. Music is rocking and so is the rest of the cast. Amar Singh Rathore and Savitri’s conversations are hilarious . Aditi’s parents are super cool and so is Aditi’s bro Amit’s room. Meghana is sweet and Sushant is dashingly wicked. Paresh Rawal performs his small yet significant role to a t. The surprise package was the entire Sohail-Arbaaz track. Loved it.

A definite weekend recommendation and must watch. Thoroughly refreshing and complete entertainer. A rating of 4/5 and smile on your face when coming out of the theater is my verdict.

First, for the nagging-worse-than-that-of-your wife ‘boss’ who moves around the floor with a coffee mug in his hand. Then, the irritating or helpless colleagues(remember there are only these 2 categories). Then, the management who is finding ‘bakras’ so that they can be laid off. And the unforgettable ‘you’( totally confused, sometimes paranoid) in the MNC work culture. As the movie progresses, you start familiarizing with it. Minute things that have happened all the time. The banners to motivate you, the razor-sharp HR language to remind you of your inferiority, the mind-boggling rules and regulations. The printer that has troubled you each and every time you accessed it. The disturbing co-workers listening to a radio or talking loudly. In fact, when half the movie is over, the three male protagonists do something hilarious that we all have wanted to do for long. I would not reveal it because I want you to check it out.

Yes, its a comedy –something that you can definitely watch and forget but at the same time think and re-think. Like there is a dialogue by Jennifer Anniston which goes something like this :

We all hate our jobs but then we need to find something good there that makes us do it.
