Recently, I installed Windows 7 using Windows 7 DVD created using using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and I was hit by an error message and was able to Solve “BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart” Error while Trying to Boot Windows 7.

After settling down with Windows 7, I was surprised to see that Quick Launch was missing from Windows 7 Taskbar

Where is Quick Launch in Windows 7?

It seems that Microsoft have deprecated Quick Launch from Windows 7. But, there is a good news for all quick launch bar lovers like me. One can add Quick Launch bar in Windows 7 using the below hack.

1. Unlock the Taskbar if it is locked.
   
2. Right Click on an empty area of the taskbar and choose Toolbars -> New Toolbar…
   
3. Now you will see an Dialog box like below, now copy the below path and paste it in the dialog box and click on “Select Folder” button.
   %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
   
4. You will see a Quick Launch appearing in Windows 7 Taskbar.

   Now right-click on the Quick Launch Bar and select Show Text and Show Title to disable it.

   It is upto you. But, i don’t like both Title and Text to appear

Today i was confronted with a problem. I use Eclipse IDE for writing code. I wanted to create a Project using SVN (Subversive).

I navigated as File -> New -> Other… I was surprised to see SVN was missing. In the past i saw SVN in the same Wizard window.

How to Install SVN (Subversion) in Eclipse 3.4.2 (Ganymede)

1. Open Eclipse. Navigate to Help -> Software Updates…
2. Go to Available Software tab and then go to Ganymede > Collaboration Tools
3. You should find Subversive SVN Team Provider. If you don’t find then
   Click on Add Site… and copy this URL http://download.eclipse.org/technology/subversive/0.7/update-site/ and click OK
4. It will now Install SVN Team Provider. Just Follow the instructions and restart Eclipse.
5. Now follow Step 1 and Go to Available Softare tab
6. Click on Add Site… and copy this URL http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/update-site/ and click OK
7. It will now Install Subversive SVN Connectors. After installation is completed restart Eclipse
8. Now select the SVN connector by navigating to Window -> Preferences -> Team -> SVN
9. Now you should be able to create a project using SVN.

Hope you were able to add / install SVN (Subversion in Eclipse).

Few days back, i encountered a vague problem on Eclipse IDE.

Eclipse is a IDE (Integrated Development Environment). I use it to code Java. Suddenly, Eclipse Debugger started breaking / suspending at FileNotFoundException.

When i looked at the stack-trace, It was breaking in some internal Java classes. I didn’t put a breakpoint, but still Eclipse debugger was suspending / breaking at FileNotFound Exception.

After wasting lot of time, I found out the solution to “Eclipse Debugger always breaking / suspending on FileNotFoundException”.

• Under menu, go to Window -> Preferences
• On the left side, Expand Java and select Debug
• You will see lots of options on the right side. Now Uncheck the option – “Suspend execution on uncaught exceptions”

4. After doing this changes to get the changes applied, Restart the Firefox browser. Now install the addon that was not supported or compatible by Firefox 3.5 and install it.
5. Restart the Firefox browser once again. Now, the not compatible addon will work with Firefox 3.4

I found a website which provides free service. The name of the website is Block a country. The website basically generates the list of country ip addresses so that you could block the whole country. It works based on country ip addresses so that you can block a country

Lets say if i want to block all the visitors or Traffic from Guyana. Just do the below.

• Visit the site Block Country.
• You will find a list box containing all the countries. Select Guyana and click on “Block Now!” Button.
• It will generate the script containing list of Country IP Addresses and Country IP Address Ranges.
• You need to copy the whole generated text and paste that in your .htaccess file. The generated script blocks the traffic coming from the that country.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you make any changes.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} ^190\.80\.0\.[0-18]

.htaccess file is located in /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Now nobody from the specified country cannot access your website.

If you look at the above generated script, It has the code which is also redirecting the Blocked Traffic to http://www.blockcountry.com/blocked.php. You can change to any other website like below

RewriteRule ^(\.*)$ http://www.somewebsite.com/ [L,R]

You can also remove that line if you don’t want to redirected the blocked visitor.

In this way, you can deny access to blog/website from specific countries.

What is HotLinking?

Avoid / Prevent Hotlinking of images or files (Credit http://www.conquerhosting.com)

Inline linking (also known as hotlinking, leeching, piggy-backing, direct linking, offsite image grabs and bandwidth theft) is the use of a linked object, often an image, from one site into a web page belonging to a second site. The second site is said to have an inline link to the site where the object is located.

Recently, i noticed one blogger published a post in his blog, instead of uploading the image in his own site, he linked the image of my site. Every time somebody visits his post, the image will be downloaded from my site.

There are two problems

- Loss of bandwidth.
- Image Theft (you might have created the image after a lot of hardwork and wouldn’t like somebody using your image without your permission)

There is a way in which you can stop this. It can be done by adding few lines of code in .htaccess.

Prevent Hotlinking of file and images using .htaccess hack

I am assuming that you know about .htaccess file. It resides in the root directory of your website. The root directory could be /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Any of them depends on the hosting service.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you making any changes.

1. Login to your hosting service site and open code>.htaccess file. Make sure you backup the file before making any changes.
2. Add the following code in code>.htaccess file and save the file.

   RewriteEngine on
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://niharsworld.com/.*$ [NC]
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://niharsworld.com$ [NC]
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.niharsworld.com/.*$ [NC]
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.niharsworld.com$ [NC]
   RewriteRule .*\.(htm|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png|gif)$ - [F,NC]

3. From the above line, you can make out that i am blocking hotlinking of htm, jpg, jpeg, bmp, png, gif files.

   You may remove or add any file extension that you want to avoid HotLinked.

Block Visitor from Specific IP Address using .htaccess Hack

I am assuming that you know about .htaccess file. It resides in the root directory of your website. The root directory could be /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Any of them depends on the hosting service.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you making any changes.

• Grab the IP Address of that visitor by checking your favourite Stats webservice. I use StatCounter to get the IP Address or Wordpress Dashboard (if the visitor has left a comment).
• Login to your hosting service site and open code>.htaccess file. Make sure you backup the file before making any changes.
• Lets say i want to block a Visitor coming from this IP Address 120.120.120.120. I will add the below entry in .htaccess at the end of the file.

  deny from 120.120.120.120

• Now save the file

If you want to block more visitors, just keep adding the ip addresses in .htaccess file .

In this way, you can also block the automated spammer.

From the last few years, I was using Tata Indicom Landline phone at my home. Recently, I switched to BSNL Landline Phone. After a few days, I faced a weird problem.

The problem was “I cannot dial to Toll Free number starting with 000 xxx xxx”. As soon as i dial more than two 0 digits, I was getting a message that “This facility is not available on your telephone”.

I don’t have ISD Connection. Note that this is not a ISD number. This is India Toll Free Number.

After lot of days of research and talking to BSNL technical team, I got two solutions to the problem. Below, i am mentioning those two solutions.

Two solutions to dial 000 800 xxx Toll Free number

1. Ask BSNL Exchange to change the Switch:BSNL uses two types of switches – Ericsson and C-Dot.

   A phone that is connected through C-Dot accepts the call if the number starts with 000 and it has nothing to do with STD/ISD facitlity. It is called “Connect call” facility.

   If you cannot call to number starting with 000, It means that your Phone is using Ericsson Switch and you need to contact BSNL and explain to them the same and ask them to change the switch to C-Dot.

   There is no plan change or cost limitation other than this. The technical team can change the switch in 10 minutes only if their planning team sends a written letter.

2. Subscribe for ISD FacilityI was unlucky. I was told that in my city they don’t use Ericsson switch.

   The only option left for me was to subscribe to ISD Facility.

   It is strange issue. But i got it resolved by getting ISD Facility. I am now able to dial 000 xxx India Toll Free numbers.

Find Jar Files by typing the class name

Last week, during my daily work at job, I faced a problem. The problem was i was getting compilation error in Java project.

The error was “Cannot find Classname”. I didn’t encounter the ClassName in my whole Java Experience. I wanted to find the Jar file which contains this Class so that i can move forward.

I then started searching for solutions in Google Search Engine. I was lucky that i found findJar.com

findJAR.com is a free web service which is a JAR search engine that helps to find JAR files containing required Java classes.

– Simply enter the name of the class or the JAR file you are looking for and start your search.
– findJAR.com can be used to easily resolve NoClassDefFoundError and ClassNotFoundException problems.
– findJar.com claims that their database holds more than 2,260,000 classes in 17.600 JAR files.

If you find a class or JAR file that is not there in their database, you can contact them and request them to add it in their database.

Vuze is one of the most popular Torrent Client. Vuze was recently updated. The new version of Vuze comes with a new feature called auto-conversion.

I download lots of videos using Torrents. But, most of the video torrents are good to watch on Desktop or Laptop. What if you want them to be copied in Ipod, PlayStation or Xbox?

Before i came to know about this, If i want a video for my Ipod, i search for a Video torrent which is can be watched on iPod, same is the case with PlayStation or Xbox.

But, with this new version you need not bother about it. Just download your favorite Video Torrents and use the drag-and-drop feature to automatically convert the video torrent from its native format to an appropriate one for iTunes, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and then copy it to your device.

Vuze 4.2 offers users a drag-and-drop video conversion option.

It is still in Beta version.

The new Devices tab on the left nav will ask you to install a transcoder and a plug-in. Devices then detects iTunes or any of the devices when they are connected to your computer/laptop. When you choose iTunes, Vuze will then push the video without user input. From there, you can sync the video to your iPod or iPhone. Xbox and PlayStation users will see the video streamed directly from their PC or Mac to their game console.

Since i don’t have a Xbox or Playstation, i haven’t tested this feature for those two devices.

This new Auto Conversion feature is a bit slow but, Vuze is certainly giving users who are looking for something between the basic uTorrent and the robust Miro an interesting and feature-rich third option.

I am going to continue using this because, i don’t have to search for video torrents for Ipod / Playstation / Xbox

I use search tool very much. It can be any application. I also use search to quickly navigate to a particular place in a website. If a website has lot of text and links and i am sure what i am looking for. I press “CTRL + F”.

I think most of the tech savvy guys use firefox search feature. One thing that i don’t like about it, it can only remember one word or phrase at a time. What if you visit some sites and daily look for some search terms? It is difficult to always type in the words?

This add-on saves the search history and gives a drop down history list when searching a word or phrase that was already searched.

With it installed you can have up to 15 of your latest searches saved for later use and quick selection. Every time you do an on-page search it simply saves that word or phrase in its history even after you start searching for something else. Neat.
