How to Hide Firefox Tabs using Hide Tab Firefox Addon

Once the tab is hidden, the tab image on the bottom right status bar becomes red color. You can click on it again and Unhide the hidden Firefox tab or hide more Tabs.

Recently, I installed Windows 7 using Windows 7 DVD created using using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.

After started using Windows 7, I suddenly started facing Windows Updates Error in Windows 7. I tried rebooting the machine and tried Windows Update on Windows 7, but was getting Windows Update Error.

I then took help of Google God and found out the solution. I am happy to share the same with you.

As a Windows user you must be knowing that proper functioning of Automatic Updates is very important to keep Windows 7 updated. Windows 7 Windows Update or Windows Vista Windows Update is known to stop working if some of the required DLL go missing or there are registry problems.

Today i was confronted with a problem. I use Eclipse IDE for writing code. I wanted to create a Project using SVN (Subversive).

I navigated as File -> New -> Other… I was surprised to see SVN was missing. In the past i saw SVN in the same Wizard window.

How to Install SVN (Subversion) in Eclipse 3.4.2 (Ganymede)

1. Open Eclipse. Navigate to Help -> Software Updates…
2. Go to Available Software tab and then go to Ganymede > Collaboration Tools
3. You should find Subversive SVN Team Provider. If you don’t find then
   Click on Add Site… and copy this URL http://download.eclipse.org/technology/subversive/0.7/update-site/ and click OK
4. It will now Install SVN Team Provider. Just Follow the instructions and restart Eclipse.
5. Now follow Step 1 and Go to Available Softare tab
6. Click on Add Site… and copy this URL http://www.polarion.org/projects/subversive/download/eclipse/2.0/update-site/ and click OK
7. It will now Install Subversive SVN Connectors. After installation is completed restart Eclipse
8. Now select the SVN connector by navigating to Window -> Preferences -> Team -> SVN
9. Now you should be able to create a project using SVN.

Hope you were able to add / install SVN (Subversion in Eclipse).

Most of us follow our favorite blogs via RSS Feeds. To keep track of all the blogs, i use FeedDemon on my PC and Newsgator on the Web as a online feed reader.

Both Newsgator and FeedDemon synchronize feeds so, that both are in sync.

Few days back, Newsgator has come up with a news that their Online Feed Reader will no longer be available. This news has caused upset to lot of users who depend on both to keep track of the blogs or news.

You guys might have noticed if you had tried to login to NewsGator account.

Now, to make sure that your feeds both in FeedDemon and Online web Feed Reader in Sync. You need to signup an account in Google Reader and move the Feeds from Newsgator to Google Reader.

How to Move Feeds from Newsgator to Google Reader

1. Sign-up for a Google Reader™ account

   You can use your existing Gmail account to login to Google Reader, so that Google Reader is also attached to the Gmail id you use the most.

2. Export NewsGator RSS Feeds
• Login to NewsGator Online
• Check on the top Nav Bar, you should see Settings. Click on it
• A new page will open, You will see Tabs on the Tab. Click on Edit Locations
  
• Under the NewsGator Web Edition Location, click OPML
• A new page will open. Now Select Expose OPML to all users and click Save Changes button
  
• Click OPML once more. A web page will open which will have OPML URL link. Click on it
• It will open the link in your browser, select File | Save as and save the file with extension .opml

  Now the first task is completed i.e., Exporting RSS Feeds into OPML file from NewsGator.

3. Import your NewsGator RSS OPML to Google Reader
• In Google Reader, click on Settings
• A page will open. Now click on Import/Export link
• Now click on Choose OPML file button and select the OPML file you saved in the previous step.
• Now click on Upload button to import OPML file to your Google Reader
• Google Reader will add all the subscriptions in the list to your account and start checking the feeds for updates

If you have followed the above steps properly, you have successfully transferred all the Feeds from Newsgator to Google Reader.

How to synchronize feeds between Google Reader and FeedDemon

All these days we were able to Synchronize feeds between FeedDemon and Newsgator. This was due to compatibility and understanding between both parties. Now that Newsgator is discontinuing Online Web Feed Reader. FeedDemon new version will be able to keep the feeds in the sync with your Google Reader.

In order to tell FeedDemon to keep the feeds in sync with Google Reader, you need to Download below FeedDemon and install it.

I started facing problems of White Screen of Death (WSOD) problems and Blog slowing down after upgrading my Blog to Wordpress 2.8. I was able to resolved them.

But, started facing the following problems recently :

• Encountering “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” when trying to do Automatic Upgrading of Wordpress
• “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” appearing in the Wordpress Dashboard

What does Error mean ?

Wordpress runs on PHP. It means though the error you are getting is on your Wordpress Blog. But, it is related to PHP Error

You get this kind of error “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16842 bytes) in wp-db.php on line 501″

Reason for this “Wordpress Fatal error:”

The reason is simple. Your Wordpress blog is overloading your PHP with lots of instructions and thereby exhausting the memory.

Therefore, This is an memory issue. It can be solved easily by changing some Wordpress Core file.

How to solve “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” Error

Below, is the best possible solution to resolve the issue. I have personally done this for this Blog. You will be changing two files php.in and wp-settings.php

Before you change modify files mentioned below, Please take a back up of it!

1. Login in your host provider website and click File Manager.
2. Try to find php.ini file on the root of your site. Mine was located in public_html folder.
3. Open php.ini in any editor they support. Look for "memory_limit" (without quotes)

   memory_limit = 32M      ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (32MB)

   You should find a line similar to the one above.

4. Try to increase the Number by multiplying by 2. For ex: if your php.ini shows 16M then try changing 32M.

   In my case, i changed it to 64M.

   Here we are telling PHP to use 64M of memory instead of 32M.

5. Save the file and close the editor
6. Now move to your wordpress directory and look for wp-settings.php file and open in File Editor
7. Look for the following two lines

   if ( !defined('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT') )
   	define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '32M');

8. Once you find it, Try changing it to the number that you have changed in php.ini in the above steps. In my case i changed the second line to 64M

   Here we are trying to increase the Memory usage of Wordpress by telling Wordpress to use 64M instead of 32M by modifing it in wp-settings.php

   Remember : You will need to make the above change to wp-settings.php after you upgrade the Wordpress. As these changes will be overwritten by new file

9. Save the file and close the editor

Now, you are done. Try loading Wordpress Dashboard page or any Wordpress page where you were getting "Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size" error. Most probably, you won't see it.

I was able to solve it.

How to make Addons compatible to Firefox 3.5 or higher?

The solution is to add some configurations in Firefox settings (which is similar to Windows Registry). All the changes you make from here on are done at your own risk. Do revert the settings if something goes wrong.

1. Type about:config address bar of Firefox browser and hit enter. It will give you a warning. Just click the button “I’ll be careful, I promise!” and proceed…
   
2. It will show a huge list of values. Now, right click any where in the free white-space on the screen and click on New –> Boolean, then name the Boolean as checkCompatibility – make it false in the next step.
3. again right click and click on New -> Boolean and name as checkUpdateSecurity and choose false.
4. After doing this changes to get the changes applied, Restart the Firefox browser. Now install the addon that was not supported or compatible by Firefox 3.5 and install it.
5. Restart the Firefox browser once again. Now, the not compatible addon will work with Firefox 3.4

What could be the reason for blocking a country or countries?

Your site may have data that you don’t want to expose to some countries or your site is getting lot of abuses from a country. There could be any other reason as well. In such cases the site owner or Blog owner would want to block the unwanted traffic from a country.

I found a website which provides free service. The name of the website is Block a country. The website basically generates the list of country ip addresses so that you could block the whole country. It works based on country ip addresses so that you can block a country

Lets say if i want to block all the visitors or Traffic from Guyana. Just do the below.

• Visit the site Block Country.
• You will find a list box containing all the countries. Select Guyana and click on “Block Now!” Button.
• It will generate the script containing list of Country IP Addresses and Country IP Address Ranges.
• You need to copy the whole generated text and paste that in your .htaccess file. The generated script blocks the traffic coming from the that country.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you make any changes.

.htaccess file is located in /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Now nobody from the specified country cannot access your website.

If you look at the above generated script, It has the code which is also redirecting the Blocked Traffic to http://www.blockcountry.com/blocked.php. You can change to any other website like below

RewriteRule ^(\.*)$ http://www.somewebsite.com/ [L,R]

You can also remove that line if you don’t want to redirected the blocked visitor.

I am sure most of the Website owners or Blog owners have faced this problem. Some visitor is nasty or jealous and wants to trouble by posting abusive comments or do harm to the website.

One of the solutions is to Block or Deny the access to your Blog or website.

Yes, you can block a Visitor of your website. Read on to know how to do that….

Block Visitor from Specific IP Address using .htaccess Hack

I am assuming that you know about .htaccess file. It resides in the root directory of your website. The root directory could be /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Any of them depends on the hosting service.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you making any changes.

• Grab the IP Address of that visitor by checking your favourite Stats webservice. I use StatCounter to get the IP Address or Wordpress Dashboard (if the visitor has left a comment).
• Login to your hosting service site and open code>.htaccess file. Make sure you backup the file before making any changes.
• Lets say i want to block a Visitor coming from this IP Address 120.120.120.120. I will add the below entry in .htaccess at the end of the file.

  deny from 120.120.120.120

• Now save the file

If you want to block more visitors, just keep adding the ip addresses in .htaccess file .

In this way, you can also block the automated spammer.

I was reading an excellent post How to Stop Your WordPress Blog Getting Hacked. In that, the author has listed out different ways on how you can stop your Wordpress Blog getting hacked.

The second point in that post is to “Remove Meta Generator Tag”. This tag reveals the Wordpress Version you are using. This is the reason to remove that tag.

As instructed, i headed to header.php of my current theme and looked for the following line to remove it.

<meta name="generator" content="WordPress 2.7" />

I was surprised to see that line was not there but, it was getting generated when i view the source of my Blog.

I then found a way to Remove Wordpress Meta Generator tag.

If you look the contents of header.php carefully, you will find a function call wp_head() just before tag. This is the function which is adding Wordpress Meta Generator Tag.

Our aim is to remove that tag from getting generated by wp_head() function.

Following steps are to remove meta generator tag in wordpress:-

1. Login into your wordpress as administrator privilege
2. Go to Appearance -> Editor and click on the file functions.php
3. Add this line before the line with ?> (make sure you are not adding it in any function) and click Update

remove_action(’wp_head’, ‘wp_generator’);

4. If you don’t find functions.php, then you need to create one with the content below and upload to your theme folder:-

<?php remove_action(’wp_head’, ‘wp_generator’); ?>

5. Save the file.
6. Clear the cache if you using any caching plugin, Load your blog and check the source code.

Most of the Windows users have preference on whether “CapsLock”, “NumLock” or “ScrollLock” keys should be turned on or off after Windows has started.

I prefer NumLock to be in On status and CapsLock in Off status after windows has completed started.

What if your preference is not same as the default settings that Windows? Below is the tip by which you can do changes in Windows Registry to permanently change the settings according to your preference!

Below are the steps to change the ON/OFF Status of CapsLock, NumLock and ScrollLock Keys:

Please take backup of Registry before making any changes!
• Start->Run… then, Type “regedit” without quotes and press Enter.
• It will open Windows Registry. Now navigated to the following key based on your choice:

  To change the setting for currently logged in user:
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

  To change the setting for all users:
  HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard

• Look for “InitialKeyboardIndicators” string on the right side pane and change the value between 0 to 7 based on your choice (Check below for the definition of each numeric number):

  0 – Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
  1 – Turn CapsLock On
  2 – Turn NumLock On
  3 – Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
  4 – Turn ScrollLock On
  5 – Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
  6 – Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
  7 – Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)



• After you change the value. Close Registry Editor and restart the system and see the change!
