Recently, I installed Windows 7 using Windows 7 DVD created using using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and I was hit by an error message and was able to Solve “BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart” Error while Trying to Boot Windows 7.

After settling down with Windows 7, I was surprised to see that Quick Launch was missing from Windows 7 Taskbar

Where is Quick Launch in Windows 7?

It seems that Microsoft have deprecated Quick Launch from Windows 7. But, there is a good news for all quick launch bar lovers like me. One can add Quick Launch bar in Windows 7 using the below hack.

How to add Quick Launch Bar to Taskbar in Windows 7

1. Unlock the Taskbar if it is locked.
   
2. Right Click on an empty area of the taskbar and choose Toolbars -> New Toolbar…
   
3. Now you will see an Dialog box like below, now copy the below path and paste it in the dialog box and click on “Select Folder” button.
   %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
   
4. You will see a Quick Launch appearing in Windows 7 Taskbar.

   Now right-click on the Quick Launch Bar and select Show Text and Show Title to disable it.

   It is upto you. But, i don’t like both Title and Text to appear

Yesterday, i posted a .htaccess hack to Block Visitors from specific IP using .htaccess

Today, i am here again to share with you one more .htaccess hack.

What is HotLinking?

Avoid / Prevent Hotlinking of images or files (Credit http://www.conquerhosting.com)

Inline linking (also known as hotlinking, leeching, piggy-backing, direct linking, offsite image grabs and bandwidth theft) is the use of a linked object, often an image, from one site into a web page belonging to a second site. The second site is said to have an inline link to the site where the object is located.

Recently, i noticed one blogger published a post in his blog, instead of uploading the image in his own site, he linked the image of my site. Every time somebody visits his post, the image will be downloaded from my site.

There are two problems

- Loss of bandwidth.
- Image Theft (you might have created the image after a lot of hardwork and wouldn’t like somebody using your image without your permission)

There is a way in which you can stop this. It can be done by adding few lines of code in .htaccess.

Prevent Hotlinking of file and images using .htaccess hack

I am assuming that you know about .htaccess file. It resides in the root directory of your website. The root directory could be /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Any of them depends on the hosting service.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you making any changes.

1. Login to your hosting service site and open code>.htaccess file. Make sure you backup the file before making any changes.
2. Add the following code in code>.htaccess file and save the file.

   RewriteEngine on
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://niharsworld.com/.*$ [NC]
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://niharsworld.com$ [NC]
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.niharsworld.com/.*$ [NC]
   RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://www.niharsworld.com$ [NC]
   RewriteRule .*\.(htm|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png|gif)$ - [F,NC]

3. From the above line, you can make out that i am blocking hotlinking of htm, jpg, jpeg, bmp, png, gif files.

   You may remove or add any file extension that you want to avoid HotLinked.

Block Visitor from Specific IP Address using .htaccess Hack

I am assuming that you know about .htaccess file. It resides in the root directory of your website. The root directory could be /www/, /httpdocs/ or /public_html/ directories. Any of them depends on the hosting service.

Make sure you backup .htaccess file before you making any changes.

• Grab the IP Address of that visitor by checking your favourite Stats webservice. I use StatCounter to get the IP Address or Wordpress Dashboard (if the visitor has left a comment).
• Login to your hosting service site and open code>.htaccess file. Make sure you backup the file before making any changes.
• Lets say i want to block a Visitor coming from this IP Address 120.120.120.120. I will add the below entry in .htaccess at the end of the file.

  deny from 120.120.120.120

• Now save the file

If you want to block more visitors, just keep adding the ip addresses in .htaccess file .

In this way, you can also block the automated spammer.

Most of the Windows users have preference on whether “CapsLock”, “NumLock” or “ScrollLock” keys should be turned on or off after Windows has started.

I prefer NumLock to be in On status and CapsLock in Off status after windows has completed started.

What if your preference is not same as the default settings that Windows? Below is the tip by which you can do changes in Windows Registry to permanently change the settings according to your preference!

Below are the steps to change the ON/OFF Status of CapsLock, NumLock and ScrollLock Keys:

Please take backup of Registry before making any changes!
• Start->Run… then, Type “regedit” without quotes and press Enter.
• It will open Windows Registry. Now navigated to the following key based on your choice:

  To change the setting for currently logged in user:
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard

  To change the setting for all users:
  HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard

• Look for “InitialKeyboardIndicators” string on the right side pane and change the value between 0 to 7 based on your choice (Check below for the definition of each numeric number):

  0 – Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
  1 – Turn CapsLock On
  2 – Turn NumLock On
  3 – Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
  4 – Turn ScrollLock On
  5 – Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
  6 – Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
  7 – Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)



• After you change the value. Close Registry Editor and restart the system and see the change!

What is Windows Service

A Windows service is like any other program in start up folder which starts when Windows is booted and runs in the background as long as PC is restarted/shutdown. Each service in windows handles some work. For ex: Spooler service is used to handle print jobs. But, what if you don’t have a printer? It is better to disable that service.

I always wanted my PC to be fast and responsive. Due to this, I started finding out some of the services that are running and which are not needed. If you also want to disable unwanted services in Windows XP to improve the performance then continue reading…

To start/stop or enable/disable the services.
– Go to Start > Run and type msconfig and hit Enter.
– After services window is opened, click on the Services tab.
– Here you will see all the services registered under your Windows XP machine.

After doing some trial and error or research – whatever you want to call it. I found some of the services that can be disabled. I am listing out the services names that can be disabled.

– Find any service name you want to disable.
– Right click on it and select Disable.

Remember: You have to be 100% sure that the service you are going disable is not used by any application or device. After you disable the service, if something stops working or not properly working. Just revert it

Few months ago, Google released Google Gears. Wordpress uses Google Gears to speed up the Administration Pages.

What is Google Gears?

Google Gear is a extension for Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers that allows to navigate on compatible websites offline and synchronize when going back online.

Today, Google has rolled out a new Gmail feature called “Gmail offline functionality”. With this feature, Gmail users with Google Gears installed can access Gmail in offline mode (i.e when not connected to the Internet). This functionality of browser-based offline access to Gmail will be available to everyone in few days.

What is Gmail Offline?


With this new offline service feature, Gmail users will be able to load Gmail in their Web browsers even if they don’t have an Internet connection. They can do any operations like read, star, label, archive and organize e-mails. Offline Gmail will even allow users to compose new e-mails and move them to the Outbox, where they will wait until the user is online again to be sent.

When a Gmail user is connected to the internet, Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of mail. The cache is then synchronized with Gmail’s servers as long as the internet connection is there.

The Gears implementation will let people work within the Gmail interface without the need for a separate PC application. When offline, messages will be put in a Gears browser queue, and the desktop and online versions of the accounts will be synchronized automatically when users connect to the Internet again using the local cache of the mail.

To use this feature, first Download and install Google Gears

How to Enable Gmail offline feature

1. Login to your Gmail account.
2. Click Settings (top right) and then click the Labs tab.
3. Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
4. Click Save Changes.
5. After your browser reloads, you should see a new “Offline0.1? link”.
6. To browse in offline, simply click that link.

As this feature is still in beta, you might come across some bugs.

I have already enabled the feature and temporarily disconnected the internet to check the Gmail Offline feature. It worked great!

Few days back, I shared a wordpress trick on How to Add categories to Nav Bar. Today, i wan to share one more Wordpress Trick.

If you look at the Header section of this blog, you will see the Nav Bar. It includes pages and also some categories.



You can see from the above, that i have included following 3 pages along with the some categories. Also notice that they are not one after the other in serial order:

• Archives
• Contact me
• Earn Money

How do you do this?

It is pretty simple. You need to have some knowledge in Wordpress and you should find out in which theme file your Nav Bar code is residing.

Instructions to Add Pages to Nav Bar


My theme has nav_menu.php file. This file contains the menu code. I have put the following code in this file:

<?php wp_list_categories('orderby=name&include=3,25,42,11,10&title_li='); ?>
<?php wp_list_pages('include=225,23&sort_column=menu_order&title_li='); ?>

You can see from the above code, I have am making two calls to wp_list_pages function and in between wp_list_categories. This is the reason you see the pages and categories are mixed in the Nav Bar.

I have specified the pages that i want to include using “include=225,23″ parameter.

Each Page is assigned with a Page ID. To find the Page ID, just go to Pages -> Edit and hover over the title of any Page. The status bar of your browser will display a URL with a numeric ID at the end. This is the Post ID. You can see from the below url: 23 is the Page ID.

One important thing to notice about wp_list_pages function is that the Pages are sorted alphabetically by Page title. But, if you want them to be in another order then use sort_column=menu_order parameter.

For each Page, you can assign the Page Order from Write > Page administrative panel.

For ex: If I want Contact me to appear at the end. I will assign a higher number to Contact Me than other two pages I am displaying.



wp_list_pages function generates each page as list <li>..<li/>. It marks the current Page with HTML class current_page_item.

I download lots of Movies, Software, Tv Shows using Torrents. I use uTorrent BitTorrent client to download all the stuff.

Two days back, my browser suddenly stopped working. I usually use Firefox. I thought may be there is some problem with Firefox browser. I then tried to open a website in Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. But, i got same result. No site was opening.

I noticed one strange thing, uTorrent BitTorrent client was downloading and uploading stuff. But, at the same time i was unable to open any website in the browser. It means the internet was working.

I then closed uTorrent, waited for 10 sec and tried opening the website. I was surprised, the websites were opening. I again opened uTorrent and tried opening the website in the browser and it again stopped working.

At this point, I got to know that there is some problem related to uTorrent which is blocking the browser. Here is one of solution to unblock the browser when using uTorrent Client.

Most of the users who use Torrents know that there is a Windows tweak called Change Half Open TCP Connection Limit In Windows XP SP3 to increase the download speed drastically. I used a TCP IP Patcher tool to change the Half Open TCP Connection Limit on my Windows XP SP3 laptop to set to 256 connections.

The default Half Open TCP Conneciton Limit in windows is 10. Accidentally, due to a Windows Security patch that was installed on my PC had reset the Half Open TCP Connection Limit to 10. I thought this might be the cause of Browser stopping when using BitTorrent Client.

I used the TCP IP Patcher tool to set the Half Open TCP Conneciton Limit to 256 from 10 (Windows Default). I tried opening the websites in browser and it worked!!!

If you have same problem, Try doing above. If you fail, then there may be some other cause.

Have you noticed Home Page of this blog? On the right of each Post Title you will see a balloon image which shows number of comments for the post. This is a hyper link, if clicked will take you to the comments section of the post.

Most of the themes comes with this feature. My theme also has these feature.

Now, I wanted to display the same type of Comments Link in Single Post.

This is what I did, I opened index.php theme file. Found the following code and copied it.

 <div class="comm"><span><?php comments_popup_link('0', '1', '% '); ?></span></div> 

Then, I opened single.php and pasted the code just above the title and saved the file.

I then opened the post in the browser to see the whether the comment link is appearing in the Single post or not.

I was surprised to see that there was no Comments Link in the post. Then, I opened the source code of the page, but was unable to find the code that i pasted.

After doing some research, I found out that Comments popup link will only work inside a loop. index.php uses the loop, but single.php (Single Post) doesn’t.

I found some clue to the solution. If you closely look at the start of the comments section below:



Display number of comments in comments header section

You can see that number of comments are displayed in the header of the comments section. I immediately headed to comments.php and found that there is a comments_number function which is outputting this. I then used that function to achieve my goal.

Do the following to add Comments Link in Single Post:

1. Copy the below code.

    <div class="comm"><span><?php comments_popup_link('0', '1', '% '); ?></span></div> 

   Note: You have to use CSS classes to give the styling. Here, comm class is being used.

2. Open single.php
3. Paste it just above the title.
4. Save the file

Try opening any post in your browser to see the change. If you see the comments link in the post, then you are done. Otherwise try checking what went wrong.

This how I used different function to display Comment link in single post!!!

Most of us bookmark websites so that we can jump on to the website quickly. But, what if you have organized your bookmarks that have 10-20 categories each having 10-20 websites in it.

The time taken to browse through the bookmarks menu and select a particular website is more than typing the website address.

Site Launcher lets you replace your bookmarks toolbar with a window of links that can be opened using a simple keyboard shortcut.
