After Wordpress releasing Wordpress 2.9, Wordpress has now released Wordpress 2.9.1.

According to Wordpress, they have addressed some minor issues and some problems that aroused after installing Wordpress 2.9 related to Scheduled Posts and Pingbacks not properly working.

I had a problem with Pingbacks after upgrading to Wordpress 2.9. This release resolves the issues.

I started facing problems of White Screen of Death (WSOD) problems and Blog slowing down after upgrading my Blog to Wordpress 2.8. I was able to resolved them.

But, started facing the following problems recently :

• Encountering “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” when trying to do Automatic Upgrading of Wordpress
• “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” appearing in the Wordpress Dashboard

What does Error mean ?

Wordpress runs on PHP. It means though the error you are getting is on your Wordpress Blog. But, it is related to PHP Error

You get this kind of error “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16842 bytes) in wp-db.php on line 501″

The above is the error i was getting in the Wordpress Dashboard

Reason for this “Wordpress Fatal error:”

The reason is simple. Your Wordpress blog is overloading your PHP with lots of instructions and thereby exhausting the memory.

Therefore, This is an memory issue. It can be solved easily by changing some Wordpress Core file.

How to solve “Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size of xxx bytes exhausted” Error

Below, is the best possible solution to resolve the issue. I have personally done this for this Blog. You will be changing two files php.in and wp-settings.php

Before you change modify files mentioned below, Please take a back up of it!

1. Login in your host provider website and click File Manager.
2. Try to find php.ini file on the root of your site. Mine was located in public_html folder.
3. Open php.ini in any editor they support. Look for "memory_limit" (without quotes)

   memory_limit = 32M      ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (32MB)

   You should find a line similar to the one above.

4. Try to increase the Number by multiplying by 2. For ex: if your php.ini shows 16M then try changing 32M.

   In my case, i changed it to 64M.

   Here we are telling PHP to use 64M of memory instead of 32M.

5. Save the file and close the editor
6. Now move to your wordpress directory and look for wp-settings.php file and open in File Editor
7. Look for the following two lines

   if ( !defined('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT') )
   	define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '32M');

8. Once you find it, Try changing it to the number that you have changed in php.ini in the above steps. In my case i changed the second line to 64M

   Here we are trying to increase the Memory usage of Wordpress by telling Wordpress to use 64M instead of 32M by modifing it in wp-settings.php

   Remember : You will need to make the above change to wp-settings.php after you upgrade the Wordpress. As these changes will be overwritten by new file

9. Save the file and close the editor

Now, you are done. Try loading Wordpress Dashboard page or any Wordpress page where you were getting "Wordpress Fatal error: Allowed memory size" error. Most probably, you won't see it.

I was able to solve it.

I have found a new Wordpress plugin called WP Greet Box. I am found it really interesting and am impressed with this plugin. I am going to first instroduce you to WP Greet Box and will give my review!

What is WP Greet Box?

This is a Wordpress plugin which show a different greeting message to your new visitors depending on their referrer URL.

Below are Few examples

If visitor arrives to the post from Google search engine, they will see a message asking to subscribe to the RSS feed if they liked the post. The plugin will also show posts based on the search keyword used in google search engine.

If a visitor arrives from Twitter, they will see a message suggesting them to twit the post and follow you on Twitter.

You can also set a default greeting message for new visitors (not matching any referrer URLs) suggesting them to subscribe to your RSS feed.

These greetings helps the visitor with the suggestions and reader interaction.

My review on WP Greet Box

You can download the from Wordpress Plugin directory. I use WP Easy Uploader Plugin to download and upload the plugin on my blog from Wordpress Admin itself.

There are no hassles for installing the plugin. It is pretty simple.

Upon activating the plugin, just go to Settings -> WP Greet Box. You will see list of referrers that are inbuilt with the plugin. If you don’t find a particular referrer then, you can add new referrers to the blog. you can also edit or delete referrers to your blog. Not only this, you can also activate or deactivate each referrer individually.

One more thing i liked and would like to mention here is the ability to display related posts. If the visitor visits the blog from any search engine, then along with the greet message you will see related posts for a query based on the search keyword used.

Did you know about WP Greet Box before reading this? How was the review?

Few days back, I shared a wordpress trick on How to Add categories to Nav Bar. Today, i wan to share one more Wordpress Trick.

If you look at the Header section of this blog, you will see the Nav Bar. It includes pages and also some categories.

You can see from the above, that i have included following 3 pages along with the some categories. Also notice that they are not one after the other in serial order:

• Archives
• Contact me
• Earn Money

How do you do this?

It is pretty simple. You need to have some knowledge in Wordpress and you should find out in which theme file your Nav Bar code is residing.

Instructions to Add Pages to Nav Bar

My theme has nav_menu.php file. This file contains the menu code. I have put the following code in this file:

<?php wp_list_pages('include=225,23&sort_column=menu_order&title_li='); ?>

You can see from the above code, I have am making two calls to wp_list_pages function and in between wp_list_categories. This is the reason you see the pages and categories are mixed in the Nav Bar.

I have specified the pages that i want to include using “include=225,23″ parameter.

Each Page is assigned with a Page ID. To find the Page ID, just go to Pages -> Edit and hover over the title of any Page. The status bar of your browser will display a URL with a numeric ID at the end. This is the Post ID. You can see from the below url: 23 is the Page ID.

One important thing to notice about wp_list_pages function is that the Pages are sorted alphabetically by Page title. But, if you want them to be in another order then use sort_column=menu_order parameter.

For each Page, you can assign the Page Order from Write > Page administrative panel.

For ex: If I want Contact me to appear at the end. I will assign a higher number to Contact Me than other two pages I am displaying.

wp_list_pages function generates each page as list <li>..<li/>. It marks the current Page with HTML class current_page_item.

Have you noticed Home Page of this blog? On the right of each Post Title you will see a balloon image which shows number of comments for the post. This is a hyper link, if clicked will take you to the comments section of the post.

Most of the themes comes with this feature. My theme also has these feature.

Now, I wanted to display the same type of Comments Link in Single Post.

This is what I did, I opened index.php theme file. Found the following code and copied it.

 <div class="comm"><span><?php comments_popup_link('0', '1', '% '); ?></span></div> 

Then, I opened single.php and pasted the code just above the title and saved the file.

I then opened the post in the browser to see the whether the comment link is appearing in the Single post or not.

I was surprised to see that there was no Comments Link in the post. Then, I opened the source code of the page, but was unable to find the code that i pasted.

After doing some research, I found out that Comments popup link will only work inside a loop. index.php uses the loop, but single.php (Single Post) doesn’t.

I found some clue to the solution. If you closely look at the start of the comments section below:

Display number of comments in comments header section

You can see that number of comments are displayed in the header of the comments section. I immediately headed to comments.php and found that there is a comments_number function which is outputting this. I then used that function to achieve my goal.

Do the following to add Comments Link in Single Post:

1. Copy the below code.

    <div class="comm"><span><?php comments_popup_link('0', '1', '% '); ?></span></div> 

   Note: You have to use CSS classes to give the styling. Here, comm class is being used.

2. Open single.php
3. Paste it just above the title.
4. Save the file

Try opening any post in your browser to see the change. If you see the comments link in the post, then you are done. Otherwise try checking what went wrong.

This how I used different function to display Comment link in single post!!!

I thought if i blog the solution, It can also help other readers of this blog.

In Wordpress 2.7 Features, a new feature – Threaded Comments is introduced.

The problem is that most of the wordpress bloggers are facing is that their theme doesn’t support Threaded or Nested Comments.

To check whether Threaded Comments is supported by your current theme or not, Follow the below steps:

1. Upgrade Wordpress is to 2.7 version, if not yet upgraded.
2. Login to Wordpress admin and go to Settings -> Discussion
3. Check on “Enable threaded (nested) comments ‘n’ levels deep”.
4. Click Save changes to enable Threaded Comments.
5. View any post of your blog that contains few comments.

If you see a Reply link after each comment like shown below, then your Wordpress Theme supports Threaded Comments otherwise it doesn’t support:

You will see reply links for every individual comment

My current theme doesn’t support it. I have made some changes to comments.php and style.css to support Threaded Comments. But, the changes are not yet live on my blog. I have done whole testing on my Local PC and the screenshot is taken from there. I need to do little bit of tinkering in CSS. By the way, if you are new to CSS then Learn CSS by reading this Book. Before you proceed further, please make a backup of comments.php, functions.php and style.css

If you want your theme to be backward compatible (compatible with Wordpress 2.7 and older versions), then do the following:

You can skip the below steps, if you just want your theme to be compatible with Wordpress 2.7

1. Copy comments.php with a new name legacy.comments.php. This legacy.comments.php will be used, if your wordpress is older version and comments.php will be used for Wordpress 2.7.
2. Copy the below code and paste in Themes functions.php file

3. Above code will check whether wp_list_comments function exists or not. If exists, it will cleverly use comments.php (which will contain Comment Threading feature) otherwise it will use legacy.comments.php which is original comments.php code that came with the theme.

To allow full JavaScript functionality with the comment features in WordPress 2.7, the following changes must be made to header.php.

To support the new JavaScript functionality with comment threading, add the following in the header.php immediately before the call to wp_head():

Most of the changes are done. If everything is done properly, you should be seeing Comment Threading appearing on the post. But, with the new code for comments in place, you need to style the comments area on the WordPress Theme with more design integration than previously.

There is a good news for all bloggers who blog on Wordpress Platform. WordPress 2.7 has finally been released!

Though there was Wordpress 2.7 Beta version was available, i didn’t upgrade my blog. I was sitting happy with Wordpress 2.6. Few hours back i upgraded my blog to Wordpress 2.7. There are lot of features that have been added. The first feature you will see as soon as you upgrade your blog is a Brand New look to your Wordpress Dashboard. I was surprised to see that the whole look of Wordpress Administration. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version.

4. Built-in Threaded comments support (my current theme doesn’t support,but i will modify the theme to support it. Will also come with a post, so stay tuned!)

As i mentioned above, my current theme does not support Threaded comments. I am right now editing the current theme to get it working. Once i get it working, I will publish a post on how to edit the comments.php to get Threaded comments working. Every day there are number of blogs coming up on the web. With this increase in number of blogs, there is also a increase in “Copy Cats” who simply copy our content without our permission and without attribution.

The question is How do you Protect your Blog content from getting copied?

Below is one of the solution.

My friend Chetan from TheChetan.com has developed his first ever Wordpress Plugin called WP-CopyProtect.

This is just a basic copy protect plug-in which stops the Copy Cat from copying the content. But, if someone want to copy your content he/she can go to source of the blog and can easily copy the stuff from there.

I am very happy to see that he has developed the plugin. It has also inspired me to create a Wordpress Plugin. I have few things in my mind. If i am free and have mood to do some coding in PHP, I will come up with my own Wordpress plugin in future.

Two comments awaiting for moderation on my blog!

To moderate blog comments, Most of us login to wordpress admin and check for any new comments awaiting to be moderated.

I discovered couple of days back that now there is no need to check wordpress admin every hour to see whether there are any new comments or not.

All it takes is a wordpress plugin and an application. The application sits in your Desktop – System tray and notifies whenever there is a new comment made on your blog, something similar to yahoo messenger or Gtalk.

Isn’t great?

The Wordpress plugin is Moderator. and is written by Daniel Dura

Moderator is a combination of a WordPress plugin and an Adobe Air Application.

Adobe AIR application will sit on your desktop in system tray:

1. Viewing unmoderated comments.
2. Dock and system tray notifications of the number of unmoderated comments.
3. Accept, delete, and spam comments from within the desktop client.
4. Close application window, or minimize it to the system tray while running.
5. Shows the Gravatar icons for the user who posted the comment.

Install and activate the plugin, then download and install the Adobe Air application. Once the installation goes smoothly, you will see a black colored window appearing. Just enter wordpress username and password. Its Done!!

From now you can access to comment moderation queue right from your desktop. It also shows an icon in the system tray, the icon is similar to the comment moderation bubble graphic with a number that represents the amount of comments in the moderation queue.

I think this is a very good feature that you can start using to moderate comments!

I was reading Do you need all those revisions? post from Nice2All blog. In the post, i found piece of SQL and PHP code.

Below is the Sample 1, how the code looked in that post:

As you can see that the coloring, formatting is making the code stand out and there are also options like view plain, copy to clipboard, print.

I think i have around 5 posts that show code samples in the posts and here is how it looks.

I know every one would prefer the Sample 1 rather than the Sample 2.

As soon as i read the above mentioned post, i left a comment asking the author about the code format and found out that it can be done by just installing a wordpress plugin called SyntaxHighlighter Plus.

How to beautify code sample in your post using Syntax Highlighter Plus:

• Open a new post or Modify an existing post
• For ex: If i want to show javascript code, then just put javascript code in between [javascript/] your code.. [/javascript]
• Save the post

It supports following languages:

CommentLuv Wordpress Plugin

I am big fan of CommentLuv Wordpress plugin developed by Andy Bailey from FiddyP. I published a post few months back on How to get more comments and visitors by using CommentLuv Plugin.

I am using CommentLuv plugin on this wordpress blog from May 2008. Andy got so many inputs from the bloggers for improving CommentLuv plugin and his zeal made him to improve the plugin. This week he has released a new version of CommentLuv called AjaxCommentLuv.

From CommentLuv:

CommentLuv and AjaxCommentLuv enable you to reward your blog readers by leaving a titled link to their last post automatically whenever they comment thus encouraging more comments by more people on more posts!

It has been found to increase comments and traffic to blogs and their commentators. It currently runs as a Wordpress or Drupal plugin with a new AJAX version coming soon compatible with a wide range of blogs.

The previous version of commentluv used to grab the last post of the commentator. But new verison of commentluv will allow the commentator to select any one of his/her from last 10 posts.

If you register your site for free at CommentLuv.com you will be able to open up lots of features that are for members only like link tracking so you can see which of the comments you make on CommentLuv blogs are getting the last blog post clicked. Do NOT enter a number if you do not have one

3. Now login in commentluv.com and go to Settings page. There you will add your website by giving your website url and then you have to select a badge which is an image that you need to put in your homepage on the sidebar or footer.
