There is a good news for all Yahoo! Messenger users. Yahoo have finally made release of Yahoo! Messenger 10 Final version. From last few months, Yahoo! Messenger 10 was in beta stage. Now, it is out of beta.

The final version of the Yahoo! Messenger 10 (10.0.0.1102) has fixed lots of existing bugs and has also come up with some new features.

Finally Yahoo! has officially released final version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.

Yahoo has released its popular IM for Windows XP and Vista, and comes packed with many new features including the new and improved user-interface.

Multiple Yahoo Messengers on single PC

Here are the steps :

• Click on Start -> Run…
• Type Regedit in Run text box and hit enter to launch Registry Editor
• Now, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Yahoo > Pager > Test.
• On the right pane, right click and click on New > DWORD value
• Rename the new registry key as Plural.
• Right Click on “Plural” and Select “Modify”. Change the cell value in “Value Data” to 1 (For Vista & Windows 7 users) Thanks to kristina

Close the Registry. You are done. Now try opening multiple instances of yahoo messenger and login with multiple accounts…

Today, I am going to tell on how to get Free POP3 access for your Yahoo Mail account.

What is POP3?
POST OFFICE PROTOCOL. More on it @ Wiki.

If your email provider provides free POP3 service, you need not login to the account to check your mails. You can use email clients like Microsoft Outlook, Incredimail and many others on your PC.

You just have to configure your client to access your mail that’s all! As soon as you have a new mail in your Inbox, the client will download the mail for you. So you need not login to your Inbox for newer mails.

Gmail provides free POP3 access. But Yahoo doesn’t, it charges for the service. But no worries, there is way to get POP3 access to your Yahoo Mail without any charge.

I am using this from last 2 years or so. Download Yahoo Pops!

How do we do it you ask? Well, this application is more like a gateway. It provides a POP3 server interface at o­ne end to talk to email clients and an HTTP client (browser) interface at the other which allows it to talk to Yahoo!.

YPOPs! was inspired by a Perl script called FetchYahoo written by Ravi Ramkissoon. YPOPs! is available on the Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac platforms.“

Download it and then you can find the link to Configuring Mail Clients in that site on the left side, that will tell you the steps to configure yahoo pops and your email client(it can be outlook, incredimail or any other clients).

Try it out. It will be fascinating to see your yahoo mails arriving on your PC in your email client.
You can even send mails using yahoo without actually accessing yahoo mail.

Want to ask you “Is Yahoo Chat safe ?”. Think….

My answer:
well, it depends…

I came to know from my 10+2 friend Maqsood that one can peep into others yahoo chat messages…

Lets start from the networking perspective. As most of you know, any data in network is passed as a packet. Every packet has a destination IP address, source IP address and the message itself.

In this case yahoo chat messages are also transmitted as packets.

Sniffer can be used to monitor the network traffic or packets flowing in the network.

On the net you can find yahoo sniffer which sniffs packets to capture yahoo chat packets.

Now the question is… If you have sniffer running on your PC, sniffer can read only those packets that are coming to your system i.e., only your buddy’s messages. then how come you can get your neighbor’s chat messages?

The answer lies here…. the type of hardware device used to connect multiple PC’s (your, neighbors) by your internet provider.

There are two types of devices that can be used :

• Hub (Ethernet hub)

• Switch

Hub is a dumb device and Switch is an intelligent device.

Switch uses a mapping table that contain entries of IP address and Lan card MAC address. As packet arrives, switch decides to which PC the packets need to be directed to by looking into Mapping table. There are few sniffers on the web that can modify the mapping table in the switch device to direct all the packets to a hacker PC who has installed this sniffer.

Sniffers that modifies mapping address in the switch are detectable and can be caught.
Sniffers that only rely on Hub can’t be caught or detected because, they are just sitting on the hackers PC.

Lets take an example. A, B and C are using X ISP and all are connected to the internet by the hub.
What a hub does is that it gets packets from outside world and sends them to all the connected devices without checking the destination IP address embedded in the packet. A, B and C will receive the packets and the LAN card will check the destination IP address to decide whether to discard the packet or not. Lets say, A is chatting with his friend. A,B and C gets A’s friend message but A’s PC accepts the packet, decodes it and shows up the message. B’s and C’s PC will discard it.

What sniffer does is, it sits at the gate of the PC that is on the LAN Card, captures all packets (in this case yahoo sniffer), if it detects yahoo packet, it will decode and show the message.
If B’s PC has installed yahoo sniffer, B can read A’s message and his friend’s message.

Switch device takes the packet check the destination IP address and sends it to only respective PC.

I had used Yahoo Sniffer when I was in Mumbai, India and my isp provider was using hub. so, i was able to see whats going around in my building, who’s chatting with whom.. who is a good guy, bad guy, good girl, bad girl….

So, if you wanna know whether your network is connected via hub or switch, just run the sniffer and check it for 1 or 2 hours. If you see only your and your buddy’s message then a switch is used; if you see others messages as well then a hub is used( in which case you are in a danger as your messages are leaked).
