Few days back, I mentioned about Sony Vaio Laptop / Notebook shutting down suddenly due to improper working of Fan.

Today, there is one more news for all of you. If you own a Sony VAIO notebook owner, then you need to carefully read the rest of the post.

SONY has stated that there are around 535,000 units involving affected units of VPCF11 and VPCCW2 series laptops with most of them located in US (around 259,000 units), followed by 120,000 in South East Asia, 103,000 in Europe and 52,000 in its local Japan market. While no injury incident has been reported yet, there are already around 30 complaints being received with related to this issue. The symptom is obvious, whereby consumers may experience burning hand when touching on its keyboard or casing when the system is running. Worst case is, its sleek and stylish casing can even be deformed due to excessive heat.

Sony has investigated and found out that the root cause is that BIOS is unable to effectively control internal power management system.

Temporarily, users of Sony VAIO laptops / notebooks are advised to download and install the firmware update from sony.com based on the series models and operating systems.

Can they really fix a problem like that with a download. If I owned one of them that was defective like this one I would expect some sort of replacement or a reasonable rebate to buy a new one. I understand they have had issue like this where the fans burn out, but getting burned from simply touching you keyboard is a bit out of line.

I have a VPCCW according to the label on the front in contrasting color but it says under it VPC-CW290X. Is it one of the affected computers? im rather confused about this since I got Sony’s letter with my VAIO updates but my computer barely overheats. I just want to be sure before I install this.
