    Intel has acquired McAfee

Intel has decided to buy out an AntiVirus Security Firm McAfee for “about $7.68 billion” to “expand in security software”, says Bloomberg News.

Chip giant Intel has agreed to buy computer-security software maker McAfee for $7.68 billion, or about $48 a share.

The aim of the acquisition is to boost Intel’s own online and wireless-computing efforts. In its press release announcing the deal, Intel said it sees security as becoming increasingly important in basic computing as more services move to mobile devices and to “cloud computing” — basically, a metaphor for services delivered over the Internet. It’s also part of Intel’s move to offer software designed to work with its chips, instead of just the chips themselves.

“The acquisition of McAfee, which trails Symantec Corp. in security software, helps Intel expand in wireless devices”, it says, observing:

“Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini is trying to revive a stalled effort to break into handsets. While Intel’s chips run more than 80 percent of personal computers, they aren’t in any phones now on the market.”

“The deal is subject to the usual regulatory and shareholder approval.”

Intel hosted a conference call about the deal at 10 a.m. Eastern time — or bright and early at 7 a.m. Pacific. In the call, Intel talked about its recent history of working with McAfee and why it thinks a purchase is better than a strategic partnership. Highlights are below.
