    Watson Relishes Opening Berth

Shane Watson is excited by the prospect of opening for Australia against England in the Ashes after starring with the bat in the warm-up match against Somerset.

New Australia coach Darren Lehmann this week announced Watson will bat at the top of the order in the five-match series. That vote of confidence appeared to do the 32-year-old the world of good as he struck a powerful 90 from 94 balls on the second day at Taunton.

Watson admitted it was pleasing to get some clarity on his position in the team, a move that has already had an effect on cricket Test betting.

“It’s nice for me personally to know I have the backing of the coach and the opportunity to open is something I am very excited about,” said the all-rounder.

“It doesn’t mean any more security because if I am not performing I can’t expect to get picked. But I’m very happy about it.”

Watson is no stranger to starting his innings against the new ball. He was given the responsibility by Ricky Ponting during the 2009 Ashes in England and flourished in the role – scoring 240 runs in five innings.

The right-hander has moved back down the order in recent times but is now back where he feels he belongs. The cricket betting odds indicate he is well fancied to get runs in the Ashes.

“I feel my game and my mentality is now suited to opening the batting. The English quicks are as good as there are in the world at the moment and have been for the last few years,” said Watson, who has scored 2,580 runs in 41 Tests at an average of 35.34.

“It is the ultimate challenge to take on the best bowlers with a brand new ball in what sometimes will be bowler-friendly conditions. If I can’t get up for that, there is no point in playing.”
